Nuclear localization of Beclin 1 promotes radiation-induced DNA damage repair independent of autophagy

Beclin 1 is a well-established core mammalian autophagy protein that is embryonically indispensable and has been presumed to suppress oncogenesis via an autophagy-mediated mechanism. Here, we show that Beclin 1 is a prenatal primary cytoplasmic protein but rapidly relocated into the nucleus during postnatal development in mice. Surprisingly, deletion of beclin1 in in vitro human cells did not b...

Writing qualitative article: It is time to quality improvement

Précis: This debate article highlights some questions from critics of qualitative research. Planning for proper design, philosophical background, researcher as a research instrument in the study, trustworthiness and application of findings are main debates in this field. One of the issues that have been received little attention is report of qualitative inquiry. A qualified report can an...

Repair of DNA Damage lnduced by Ultraviolet Radiation

Studies documenting the depletion of the ozone layer and the resulting increases in UV-B radiation (280-320 nm) at the Earth's surface have served to focus attention on the biological effects of UV light. One obvious target for UVB-induced damage is DNA. Although a11 biological tissues are rich in UV-absorbing agents (largely nucleic acids and proteins) and plants produce additional UV-absorbin...

Repair of ionizing radiation induced DNA damage in human lymphocytes.

Phytohemagglutinin stimulated human lymphocytes exhibit a 20 fold increase in DNA repair synthesis following ionizing radiation damage compared to the level of repair in unstimulated cells. The peak of repair synthesis coincides with that for DNA replication. Stimulated lymphocytes provide a relatively simple assay for ionizing radiation repair defects.

Molecular Mechanisms of Ultraviolet Radiation-Induced DNA Damage and Repair

DNA is one of the prime molecules, and its stability is of utmost importance for proper functioning and existence of all living systems. Genotoxic chemicals and radiations exert adverse effects on genome stability. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) (mainly UV-B: 280-315 nm) is one of the powerful agents that can alter the normal state of life by inducing a variety of mutagenic and cytotoxic DNA lesio...
